Millenium Mills Monument

The Royal Docks have seen a transformation from its days of prosperity in 1800s to present day. The recent regeneration programmes have reshaped the ways in which the Royal Docks land is being used, and the local councils have invested in building new homes and community hubs. We chose to base our bench on the disused building of Millennium Mills, once the largest granary in London, which is now being considered for regeneration project by the GLA and Local Authority. It inspired us to showcase its history and re-imagine its possible futures.

We have re-imagined the building as fragments of its facade to create the Millennium Mills Monument, a bench echoing the original building at quarter-inch scale. The interlocked planes create a modernist inspired form that nods to the buildings style, and the recycled plastic points to a more sustainable industrial future. The three vertical facades of the bench become interactive and allow the visitors to engage with the building's past, present and future. In the next section, we will explain how the AR mobile application will work to reveal interiors of the building.
